Day Two of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival began Saturday with three bands playing at noon including Sigur R s an Icelandic band from Reykjavik and the dark English group New Order.
The festival now in its 14th year has drawn tens of thousands of music lovers into the desert for the six day music festival and indy cultural event. It's taking place two hours east of Los Angeles in Indio near Palm Springs.
Friday night music featured Johnny Marr Blur Nick Cave and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Upcoming bands include the Red Hot Chili Peppers Wu Tang Clan Moby and Phoenix.
Festivalgoers Friday night made way as a giant snail the size of a three story building slowly wandered the 133 acre grounds of the Empire Polo Club where the event is held.
One amenity provided by the Indio Police were amnesty boxes made of 50 gallon steel drums. They allow attendees who brought drugs or other prohibited items to Coachella and had second thoughts a place to dispose of them.
A string of tweets sent visitors to water gun fights and a dodge ball tournament at the nearby campground where many of those who came for music spent the night. The festival has an Alice in Wonderland circus air described by one person on Twitter as Burning Man esque a nod to the Nevada desert arts happening that occurs each August.
The festival was a celebrity sighting wonderland with tweets and Facebook postings attesting to the presence of a hoard of L.A. and further afield names. They included Danny DeVito Leo DiCaprio Lindsay Lohan Paris Hilton and Victoria's Secret models Miranda Kerr Whitney Port and Alessandra Ambrosio.
Hilary Duff known to many from her days as Lizzie McGuire on Disney was there as was Kellan Lutz and Kristen Stewart from the Twilight vampire movies. Ireland Balwin fashion model daughter of Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger made an online splash in her American flag top flag socks and flag bandana.
The festival takes place over two weekends and finishes on April 21. It's expected to bring upward of 80 000 attendees.
