Boxing's pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather returns to the ring tonight after a one year layoff as he faces challenger Robert Guerrero for Mayweather's WBC welterweight title.
Good evening boxing fans. We're ready to go. Mike Coppinger from ringside and Bob Velin watching on PPV from his man cave
Mayweather (43 0 26 KOs) who is guaranteed $32 million has not fought since defeating Miguel Cotto last May 5 at the same venue the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Guerrero (31 1 1 (18 KOs) has been lobbying for a date with Mayweather for more than a year and has come off victories against tough welterweight opponents Selcuk Aydin and Andre Berto.
Mayweather wins unanimous decision
Velin Mayweather looks in tremendous shape for 36. Dancing in the 12th round. Floyd has not a mark on his face.
Coppinger Crowd began filing out midway through the final round. Guerrero raised his arms in victory for some reason. Guerrero and father Ruben now shouting at Team Mayweather in the ring. Sore sports.
Velin Guerrero trying to hurt May on the body but Mayweather is about three speeds faster than Guerrero who's landing at 20% in this fight. RG is in over his head here tonight. Bring on Canelo .
Coppinger We're going into the final round. Mayweather couldn't miss once again. We'll see if Floyd can close the show.
Velin May throws a couple of low blows but doesn't get called for them. May connecting at an amazing 61% of his punches. Not the most exciting fight you've seen but typical Mayweather fight.
Coppinger There's no energy in this crowd. Guerrero isn't doing anything and Mayweather won't step on the gas to secure the stoppage and put him away.
Velin Mayweather uppercut. But Guerrero keeps punching. A left by Mayweather lands. Guerrero throwing more but missing a lot of them. A close round but got to give to Mayweather who landed a much bigger percentage of his punches.
Coppinger Guerrero simply has no answers and no Plan B. Mayweather is as fast and sharp as ever and shows no signs of ring rust or aging. 89 82 Mayweather on my card.
Velin Guerrero cut and his face is bleeding. Guerrero cannot stop the right hand. Guerrero starting to use jab effectively. But May keeps landing rights at will. Huge round for Mayweather. He surgically took Guerrero apart with precision.
Coppinger Guerrero's left eye is a mess. He was badly hurt in Round 8. We'll see if Guerrero can survive.
Velin Guerrero fights back and continues going to the body. But Mayweather punching with precision. Connecting on quick right hands.
Coppinger Guerrero is outclassed he can't get anything going. Speed difference is monumental. I have Floyd up 6 1.
Velin They trade right hands. Guerrero has a great chin. Hasn't seemed to be hurt by May. Quick right hand pop by Money. Can't even see those right hands by Money. He has fight under control now. Mayweather hates to get hit.
Velin Guerrero trying to break down the body. Not many combinations here. May lightning quick. He connects with several single shot right hands. Too quick for Guerrero.
Coppinger Target practice in Round 5 Floyd has found his groove and just dominated Guerrero in the frame.
Velin Maywweather connects with a hard right that snapped Guerrero's head back. Malignaggi says Mayweather measuring Guerrero perfectly and he's right. Guerrero going after the body but May's right hand precise. Another round for Mayweather. 2 2 on my card.
Coppinger 3 1 Mayweather that round was a paint job on Guerrero's face. Round 5 is when Floyd usually takes over in fights after making adjustments and measuring his opponents strategy.
Velin Mayweather avoiding most of Guerrero's punches and he's finding Guerrero's head with the right hand several times in the round. This is Mayweather's round. 2 1 Guerrero
We've had three close competitive rounds and I have it 2 1 Floyd. Floyd is starting to time Guerrero and counter him more.
Velin Mayweather flat footed Guerrero landing combinations. Mayweather seems to be quiet here so far. Not sure why Maybe he's trying to figure out Guerrero's game. I give the round to Guerrero.
Coppinger P. Diddy in attendance. Good second round for Guerrero who I thought edged it. He landed some nice power shots.
Velin Guerrero the aggressor early. Guerrero countering Mayweather's right hands. Guerrero avoids most of Money's punches. I give round 1 to Guerrero
Coppinger Good opening round Guerrero landed a shot that caught Mayweather's attention but Floyd was very crisp with his signature lead straight right.
It's time for the big show Mayweather vs. Guerrero.
The national anthems are over with and there's a palpable buzz inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Fighters about to make their ring walks.
Guerrero walks to the ring to mariachi music wearing a black shirt with the slogan God is great emblazoned on the front in white.
Now Floyd walks to the ring donned in Black and Gold along with Lil Wayne rapping live. Far bigger reaction for Mayweather.
Abner Mares vs. Daniel Ponce De Leon featherweight title fight
Fight is finished. Mares TKO victory in the 9th round. Mares said he had to mix it up boxing and fighting to keep De Leon off balance. Said PDL hit him a lot.
Velin Wow Mares drops PDL again with the right hand and puts on a bull rush definitely putting PDL in peril before referee Jay Nady stopped the fight. Might have stopped it a bit early and it's what Paulie Malignaggi felt announcing from ringside. 2 20 in Round 9 Mares remains undefeated and wins the WBC featherweight title. Mares is 26 0 1.
Coppinger Mares floored Ponce De Leon with a massive counter overhand right and then finished him off moments later after pinning him in the corner. Referee Jay Nady called it off with Ponce De Leon on his feet. Seemed to be a bit of a quick stoppage.
Velin A strong round by Mares early connecting with left and right hands but PDL fought back and seemed to be on his way to take the round before Mares connected late on a combination to steal the round.
Coppinger Another strong showing from Ponce De Leon in Round 8. He seems to have caught his second wind and I've scored the last three rounds for him. I have it 5 3 Mares in rounds.
Velin PDL becoming more aggressive PDL hits with a low blow and again had the more active round. PDL barely wins the round.
Coppinger Ponce De Leon drilled Mares with a low blow forcing him to drop to a knee. Referee Jay Nady warned Ponce De Leon after Mares took about 30 seconds to recover. Ponce De Leon landed a big overhand left after the stoppage before eating some counter rights. Great end to the round that Ponce De Leon seemed to win.
Velin Mares hitting low like he's prone to do but PDL comes on strong with his left hand near the end of the round to steal it.
Coppinger Ponce De Leon had his best moments in Round 6. Scored well with power shots and remains game.
Velin Ponce De Leon seems to be lunging at Mares a lot but Mares did not take advantage. I give PDL a slight edge in the fifth round.
Coppinger Mares has won titles in two weight classes 118 and 122. Gunning for a third tonight at 126 the WBC featherweight belt held by Ponce De Leon. Mares has done a nice job of keeping one hand free in the clinch and is now starting to really separate himself.
Velin Another strong round from Mares. He's beginning to control the fight. 10 9
Coppinger Another competitive round that Mares (a 3 1/2 1 favorite) seemed to edge. He's been the cleaner puncher and is controlling the pace. WWE wrestler Triple H former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield and former light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver are ringside.
Velin Mares is a good boxer and fighter and outworks PDL to take the round 10 9
Coppinger Ponce De Leon remains dangerous and landed some solid shots in Round 3 but Mares closed the round strong after bullying Ponce De Leon into the ropes and working the body. Mares has won every round on my card.
Velin Mares drops PDL with an left hook just before the bell. 10 8 Mares
Coppinger Ponce De Leon controlled the first half of the frame but Mares began to time Ponce de Leon and connecting on some big overhand rights and left hooks. He dropped Ponce De Leon hard in the waning moments with a leaping left hook.
Velin Ponce De Leon looks like his southpaw style could give Mares a little trouble and he seems the aggressor in the first round. Slight edge to PDL 10 9
Slow first round between Mares and Ponce De Leon. Crowd is about filled up now. Mares edged it on cleaner punching on my card.
