Monday NASCAR recap Harvick fittingly wins bizarre Coca Cola 600 NASCAR ...

With a falling TV cable damaging cars and injuring spectators to a multitude of mechanical failures and accidents sidelining many a big name Sunday's Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway was as bizarre a race as NASCAR has seen in quite a while.

Which is why when the smoke wafted away and the damage cleared from the 4 hour 35 minute marathon it seemed appropriate that it was Kevin Harvick who best withstood 11 caution periods and two red flags alongside a team he has already announced that he will be parting ways with at year's end.

This is one of those nights you just know going into it you got to grind away lap after lap Harvick said following his 21st career win. Just keep yourself on the lead lap not make any mistakes.

At various points Kyle Busch Matt Kenseth Kurt Busch and Kasey Kahne each looked like the driver to beat. However NASCAR's longest race is about more than raw speed it's an endurance test for both man and machine unlike any other event in the sport.

And as Harvick bided his time each contender slowly succumbed to various maladies.

While leading Kyle Busch's chance at victory took a major hit literally when his car was struck by part of the tethering system used for one of Fox's overhead cameras.

His team was allowed to make repairs during an unusual 15 minute break granted by NASCAR but more trouble soon followed.

Yet again an engine issue proved to be Busch's undoing as a sour motor ended his night just past halfway.

In the last 18 months engine reliability has been Joe Gibbs Racing's biggest Achilles' heel. And no one has been more affected than Busch who missed the Chase last season in large part because of reliability concerns.

I've got more f blowups than I do wins Busch vented to his crew as he limped to the garage. There's nothing to fix It's f broke It's pointless.

The successful night for Kenseth who led 112 laps went by the wayside when an untimely yellow put him in the back of the pack where he was subsequently collected in a multi car wreck involving Jimmie Johnson.

As for Kurt Busch he was in the lead when a dead battery necessitated an unscheduled pit stop.

So with 14 laps left the taxing race left just two challengers standing Kahne and Harvick with the former clearly having the superior car.

But instead of pitting during what was the evening's final caution Kahne stayed on the track while the rest of the lead lap cars hit pit road for fresh rubber.

The decision left him a sitting duck on the sprint to the finish and wouldn't you know it there was Harvick a lame duck riding in second ready to pounce.

You know coming into this particular race it's going to be a long night. You're going to have to survive Harvick said. We had some strange circumstances with the cable.

Just a great night. Gil (Martin crew chief) made a great call at the end we were able to put ourselves in position and survive until the point of when it was time to go.

He wasted little time and by the time the field sped down the backstretch Harvick who is joining Stewart Haas Racing in 2014 was in the lead and pulling away for his second win of the year.

Inevitably with SHR in the midst of a slump there is conjecture whether Harvick is making the wisest of decisions leaving Richard Childress Racing.

But the deal is already done and neither driver nor car owner cares to speculate on the future and the end to their 13 year partnership.

You look at what we're doing and we're focused on this year Harvick said. We go out and race week to week do the things that we do to try to win races win a championship.

Whatever happens in the future we'll work on some other time. Right now we're working on winning next week's race.

The mindset is no different than how they approached the 600 Just survive and focus on the present while letting circumstances dictate the rest.

Thus far despite the chaos that may surround them it's a formula that has worked seamlessly.

NASCAR made the correct ruling under difficult circumstances

NASCAR has long been accused of making decisions that serve its best interests rule book be damned and worrying about the justification of those decisions later.

But there are times when deviating from standard operating procedure is the correct call. Sunday night following a TV cable falling onto the racing surface and severely damaging cars was one of those instances.

By way of fate Busch Mark Martin Marcos Ambrose and others had been dealt a cruel blow one they were not responsible for causing. My f car is killed Busch radioed his team.

Having been put in the unenviable position through no fault of its own NASCAR was facing a dilemma of having one of its crown jewel races decided by outside circumstances.

So officials did what was fair calling for an extraordinary 15 minute break to allow teams to fix their damaged machines.

This wasn't just ignoring the rule book this was rewriting it midstream.

The easy thing for NASCAR to do would have been to throw up its hands and give the time tested statement of That's racing citing how luck plays a large role in who wins and losses every week.

This was the thought process when in 2004 at Martinsville large chunks of concrete punctured a hole in Jeff Gordon's radiator while he was leading. Matt Kenseth even cited this very scenario during the stoppage.

I can't believe they're (NASCAR) doing that Kenseth told his team over the radio.

Although it may have been unprecedented it was also appropriate.

This was different than Martinsville however where something outside of the field of play directly interfered with the outcome. Using sportsmanship as its barometer NASCAR correctly realized the situation needed to be corrected.

We felt it was best to give the guys time to make the repairs Robin Pemberton told USA TODAY Sports. It wasn't their fault. You can't always do that but this time we thought it would be in the best interest of the competitors and the fans.

While the move wasn't necessarily popular even those who disagreed understood the reasoning.

The guys that were running well and didn't have any damage the last thing you wanted was to see 15 minutes of free open minded work on other competitor's race cars said Jimmie Johnson. But I really think it was the right thing to do. They handled it correctly.

Of course once you open Pandora's Box it's hard to go back with a precedent having now been set.

And the next time some unusual occurrence takes place and it will considering in the past 15 months we've see races interrupted due to a jet dryer exploding and a camera apparatus collapse teams will reference Charlotte as to why they should be allowed a break.

When this predictably occurs NASCAR will follow the same script it always does simply tossing the rule book aside doing whatever is deemed in its best interests at that particular moment. The difference was that Sunday the correct call was in the best interests of everyone involved and not just NASCAR's.

Americans gathered at cemeteries memorials and monuments nationwide to honor fallen military service members on Memorial Day at a time when combat in Afghanistan approaches 12 years and the ranks of World War II veterans dwindles.

President Obama laid a wreath Monday at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery across the Potomac River from Washington.

Let us not forget as we gather here today that our nation is still at war Obama said.

When they give their lives they are still being laid to rest in cemeteries in quiet corners across our country including here in Arlington he said. He told the stories of three soldiers who had died. Each had been devoted to their mission and were praised by others for saving lives.

Earlier in the morning he and first lady Michelle Obama hosted a breakfast at the White House with Gold Star families of service members who have been killed.

Another wreath laying ceremony was planned at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island in New York City. The park is a tribute to President Roosevelt's famous speech calling for all people to enjoy freedom of speech freedom of worship freedom from want and freedom from fear.

At the National World War II Museum in New Orleans about 30 bicyclists clustered around World War II veteran and museum volunteer Tom Blakey a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division who jumped at Normandy on D Day June 6 1944 and in May 1945 helped liberate the work camp at Wobbelin in northwest Germany.

Most of us wondered why we were there killing people and being killed he said. We didn't do anything to deserve it. When we got to that camp and saw what was there the lights came on.

The cycling group makes regular weekend training runs and on Monday started a Memorial Day ride about seven miles away at the national cemetery in Chalmette where the Battle of New Orleans the last in the War of 1812 was fought.

I'm glad I took this ride to hear a personal story Scott Gumina 41 said. Hearing one man's account of his personal experience was pretty impressive to me.

Across much of New England several days of heavy rain gave way to sunny skies for parades in towns large and small.

In Portland Maine kids and even pets displayed the Stars and Stripes as veterans youth groups law enforcement officials and civic organizations paraded to Monument Square to the tunes of a marching band sirens from a police car and the rumble of motorcycles.

It's a very important day not only for the Veteran of Foreign Wars but every veteran organization every branch of the service and every patriot in general every American. This day is hugely significant and should never be forgotten said David Olson 66 of Portland the VFW's state senior vice commander.

He said he was pleased to see a large turnout of youngsters both in the parade and along the parade route. As they get older they'll realize exactly why we do this he said.

For some veterans it was a somber event.

Richard Traiser a Marine injured when his tank came under attack in Vietnam helped deliver a three volley salute with the Marine Corps League.

Memorial Day gives those who served an opportunity to get together and remember friends who didn't make it.

I think about them a lot especially the people I lost in my platoon Traiser said. A couple of kids were 19 years old. I don't dwell on it in a morbid way but it's on your mind.

In Connecticut a Waterford man who was killed in the Vietnam War was honored with a hometown park area named for him. Arnold E. Holm Jr. nicknamed Dusty was killed when his helicopter was shot down on June 11 1972. A group of at least 100 dedicated the park this weekend.

In suburban Boston veterans gathered in a park to mark Memorial Day this year rather than hold a parade because of failing health and dwindling numbers. The city of Beverly called off its parade because so few veterans would be able to march. The parade has been a fixture in the town since the Civil War.

In Atlanta a dedication of the History Center's redone Veterans Park was scheduled for early evening. Soil from major battlefields will be scattered by veterans around the park's flagpole.

The holiday weekend also marked the traditional start of the U.S. vacation season. AAA one of the nation's largest leisure travel agencies expected 31.2 million Americans to hit the road over the weekend virtually the same number as last year. Gas prices were about the same as last year up 1 cent to a national average of $3.65 a gallon Friday.

Blackhawks have momentum face must win in Detroit

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall (55) shown here battling the Blackhawks' Andrew Shaw (65) in Game 5 of the NHL Western Conference semifinals says he is fine and ready for Game 6 though one of his hands was wrapped in gauze on Sunday.(Photo Nam Y. Huh AP)

Defenseman Niklas Krowall's hand injury has replaced Jonathan Toews' scoring drought as the hot topic in the Detroit vs. Chicago Western Conference semifinal playoff series.

Kronwall told reporters he was fine Sunday though his hand was wrapped in gauze. Detroit coach Mike Babcock did say there would be no lineup changes for Monday's Game 6 (NBC Sports Network 8 p.m.).

You get bumps and bruises along the way Kronwall said about the injury that occurred when he received a rugged hit by Chicago's Bryan Bickell during Chicago's 4 1 win in Game 5 on Saturday.

Bickell who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer also contributed a big goal in the victory that kept the No. 1 seeded Blackhawks alive in the postseason. They still trail 3 2 in the best of seven series.

With four goals in 10 games Bickell usually viewed as a role player is among the Blackhawks' top playoff goal scorers and is tied for the team lead with 28 hits. The Blackhawks face challenging salary cap decisions this summer and Bickell's desirability in the open marketplace might make it difficult for them to re sign him.

Bickell currently earns less than $600 000 and he should be in position to command a hefty raise. Last season New York Rangers player Brandon Prust was sought after as a free agent role player and he went from earning $800 000 to receiving a four year deal from Montreal paying him an average of $2.5 million.

Right now the Blackhawks' only concern is that Bickell continue to be the same factor he's been because in a series this tight everything matters. Chicago has combined for eight goals in the two games the Blackhawks have won in the series but scored a total of two goals in their three losses.

Now they need a win in Detroit to keep playing.

We've seized the momentum and now we want to try to sustain it Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said.

MORE Blackhawks load up with superpower line

FUTURE STARS Who is rising on NHL draft lists

MORE What makes a Stanley Cup champion

With Toews scoring his first goal in 10 games he undoubtedly enters Game 6 with less stress in his life although the Blackhawks never seemed all that concerned about the situation.

If you look at his last couple games I thought he played a lot of great shifts and did a lot of good things with nothing to show for it. Quenneville said.

The Blackhawks have lost eight consecutive playoff games in Detroit over the past 20 years.

Behind The Candelabra 5 Best Moments Liberaces Hot Sex More

Tweet Michael Douglas and Matt Damon are incredible in this biopic of the iconic performer check out the five reasons this HBO production is one of the best made for TV movies ever

Behind The Candelabra was the cable event of the year and it absolutely did not disappoint. Michael Douglas stars as the flamboyant entertainer Liberace and Matt Damon dumbs down as his secret young lover Scott Thorson. In a movie designed to be as decadent as possible there are many moments we are totally obsessed with and have to analyze. Check out our favorite parts below and be warned of SPOILERS AHEAD

Liberace Scott s Love Scenes

Liberace had a healthy sexual appetite and Matt and Michael pull no punches in the graphic sex scenes. Although the actors strongest moments come through the emotionally tortured moments in the film s third act their portrayals of physical love are so brave.

Incredible Costumes Hair

The film pays tribute to the late 70s and early 80s time period through an over the top recreation of the style. Much like Liberace himself the rhinestone studded outfits and feathered coifs absolutely DEMAND your attention.

Rob Lowe s Magical Face

The Parks and Recreation star is hilarious as Liberace s seedy plastic surgeon Dr. Jack Startz. Jack s role becomes increasingly sinister as he gets Scott hooked on drugs but his most important character trait is some freakish plastic surgery of his own. Just look at this lovely mug

The Spellbinding Musical Numbers

Although his personal life was a mess Liberace was undoubtedly a gifted pianist and entertainer. It was great to get glimpses into the spectacle that was one of his performances and Michael once again showed his gifts by making the concert scenes come to life.

Liberace s Final Act

Several years after his relationship with Scott imploded Liberace died of AIDS related complications but not before bringing Scott back to his mansion to visit one last time. Looking emaciated Michael s rapport with Matt showcases some of their finest acting ever. Love loss and anger are rarely portrayed with such honesty and it s a sobering end to an otherwise rollicking production.

Kanaan Darts to Long Sought Win at Indy

The girl lived. By chance four days ago she returned the necklace to Kanaan.

She thought she had enough luck he said. She wanted to give it back to me.

On Sunday fortune indeed smiled on Kanaan at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He claimed his first Indianapolis 500 in 12 tries winning in a wild finish filled with caution flags and a last gasp pass.

The 97th Indy 500 was up for grabs with three laps to go when Ryan Hunter Reay who was leading went three wide with Kanaan and Carlos Munoz into the first turn off a restart. Kanaan darted to the lead and then cruised to victory under a caution flag after Dario Franchitti crashed.

Munoz was second and Hunter Reay third.

You can t predict yellow but I said I m going for the lead Kanaan a 38 year old from Brazil said. I didn t want to be in the lead because I knew I would get caught on the restart. I was in the perfect place exactly where I wanted to be.

Kanaan made his move on the restart only after another caution that interrupted his duel with Hunter Reay and Munoz.

On the 194th lap Graham Rahal brought out the yellow flag when he hit the wall. There was only one partial lap of green flag racing the rest of the way but it was enough for Kanaan.

With three laps I thought we could have mounted another challenge Hunter Reay said. Of the second late caution he added I didn t think it would happen that soon that s for sure.

For Kanaan who celebrated in victory lane chugging and dousing himself with the traditional jug of milk the victory was an exclamation point on an illustrious career and a measure of redemption after so many close calls at racing s most famous track.

Kanaan s r sum now includes 15 IndyCar victories and a series championship in 2004. But at Indianapolis he had led in every race the last nine years only to come up short. In 2007 he led for 83 laps before two caution flags and bad weather derailed him.

I wanted this all my life Kanaan said. But over the years I was kind of O.K. with the fact that I may never have the chance to win it.

I was looking in the stands and it was unbelievable. I m speechless. This is it. I made it.

The race was a wide open and spine tingling affair from the beginning. Sixty eight lead changes shattered the previous record of 34 set last year. The number of leaders 14 set another mark with nearly half of the field leading the race at some point. After Lap 112 no one held the lead for more than six consecutive laps.

At one point there were 133 consecutive green flag laps the most since race officials began tracking the statistic in 1976. Kanaan also set an Indy 500 record with an average speed of 187.433 miles per hour.

Story lines abounded before the race. The field for the first time since 1987 included two three time winners. Helio Castroneves started eighth and lurked for much of the race in the top 10 but he never challenged for the lead and placed sixth. Franchitti the defending champion started from the 17th position but had trouble with his car and was never a threat to win although he played a major role in the outcome.

Our car was never really good all day Franchitti said. I went into the first corner on the last restart and it just didn t turn and then the hit.

He added When I saw who was leading it cheered me up a little bit. Great just phenomenal that Tony won.

Ed Carpenter of Indianapolis the hometown favorite was the pole sitter. He battled Marco Andretti who led for 31 laps early in the race before fading. Carpenter finished 10th despite leading for a race best 37 laps.

In this moment 10th is not what we came here for Carpenter said. But in the big scheme of things it is something to be happy about. I thought I was going to get it back the whole time and that is what I am disappointed with.

In qualifying last weekend Chevrolet engines claimed the top 10 pole positions. On Sunday Chevrolet had six of the top seven finishing cars.

It was a cool and sunless afternoon in Indianapolis. With the temperature 62 degrees at the start it was the third coldest race in Indy s history. Rain was in the forecast but it stayed away just like the caution flag long enough for Kanaan to capture the checkered flag.

He took his victory lap in a blue convertible with his wife Lauren at his side. He blew kisses waved to the crowd and pumped his fist high overhead. He arrived at the finish line and was greeted by a wall of supporters and camera crews. He knelt and gave the famous Brickyard bricks a kiss as the crowd chanted T.K. T.K.

For Kanaan a well liked veteran driver there were kind words from fans and competitors.

They say nice guys finish last Kanaan said. Maybe this proves them wrong.

His face will be the 100th chiseled into the side of the Borg Warner Trophy the most coveted prize in IndyCar.

Finally I m going to put my ugly face on that trophy Kanaan said.

Chicago Blackhawks Observations from Game 5 Win over Detroit Red Wings

The Chicago Blackhawks' Game 5 effort was exactly what fans wanted to see. The 'Hawks were aggressive got to the net and extended their Western Conference semifinal against the Detroit Red Wings with a 4 1 victory.

The win still leaves Chicago down 3 2 in the series and with a tough Game 6 assignment in Detroit Monday night. Still it was the first step in what we're hoping is a classic comeback against the Red Wings.

Game 5 saw coach Joel Quenneville make the decision to restore his defensive pairings to an earlier vintage. This brought a struggling Brent Seabrook back together with Duncan Keith. The two players combined for three assists on the night.

Here are some other observations from what was a satisfying Saturday night

Hopefully Jonathan Toews can build on the momentum of his Game 5 breakthrough. Quenneville was able to keep Henrik Zetterberg away from the captain and Toews got his first goal of the playoffs. Hopefully bouncing a power play goal off Jimmy Howard's face will lead to more scoring. The power play produced a pair of goals. This was a huge factor in securing the win. Andrew Shaw's redirect was the culmination of a sustained attack that saw the 'Hawks hold the puck in the Detroit zone for an impressive stretch. The Toews goal actually featured movement and passing. It was refreshing to watch and needs to continue. Bryan Bickell was a force to be reckoned with. In addition to his putback of a rebound for Chicago's first goal Bickell registered some big hits. Plastering Niklas Kronwall behind the 'Hawks' net was the icing on the cake. Dave Bolland was on the fourth line most of the night and wasn't particularly effective. However he did manage to neutralize his first penalty in the middle frame by baiting Justin Abdelkader into taking a penalty as well. Shaw took advantage of another rebound allowed by Howard on a Viktor Stalberg attempt looping behind the net and beating Howard to the post. It's about time the Blackhawks made Howard pay for leaving pucks around the net.

The 'Hawks still have a ways to go before this comeback story can conclude in Chicago's favor. There's the matter of Game 6 in Detroit where Mike Babcock will have the last line change and the home crowd will be pushing for the end of the series.

However the Blackhawks did step up and win a game that extended their season for at least one more game. The ending is yet to be written but Chicago earned the right to play on. The next chapter goes to press Monday night.
