Remembering Tim Samaras Veteran Storm Chaser Killed in Okla. Tornado

The tornado outbreak that swept through Oklahoma Friday night moved in quickly for the second time in two weeks and the cluster of twisters were deadly. In the storm's aftermath 13 people have been confirmed dead. Among them were three veteran storm chasers.

Tim Samaras his son Paul Samaras and their colleague Carl Young were all killed while trying to document and research the storm.

Tim was found inside his car with his seat belt still on. Paul and Young were pulled from a car by a tornado. One of them was found dead a half mile away.

Tim Samaras who led the storm chasing team was an esteemed scientist. In the storm chasing community he was known not only as one of the best but one of the most cautious. He chased because he wanted to learn find out how to improve warning systems and help meteorologists do a better job of forecasting tornadoes.

Much of Samaras' recent research was funded through National Geographic which issued a statement today that said We are shocked and deeply saddened... Samaras was a courageous and brilliant scientist who fearlessly pursued tornadoes and lightning ... in an effort to better understand these phenomena.

I first learned of Tim Samaras from his research. He was a scientist who had the record pressure drop inside a tornado from one of his probes. Years later I met him while shooting Storm Chasers on the Discovery Channel. He was a mentor and hero to my then boyfriend Reed Timmer.

He always knew what he was doing and he's always been controlled and safe and it just doesn't make sense Timmer said of Samaras' death.

Carl Young was part of the research group Samaras founded called TWISTEX or Tactical Weather Instrumented Sampling in Tornadoes EXperiment.

Last August we documented one of Tim Samaras' scientific expeditions for Nightline. Samaras and his son took us along on Samaras' quest to document the birth of a lightning strike. On our trip he showed me his baby the Kahuna a camera that can slow motion capture at 1.4 million frames per second it is possibly the fastest camera in the world.

I stood in his kitchen as father and son gave one of their many goodbyes to Samaras' wife Kathy. They hugged and she told them to be safe.

With the Kahuna in tow Samaras took us on an 800 mile journey across Colorado New Mexico Kansas and Oklahoma hoping to capture the exact moment that triggers a lightning strike.

Why does lightning choose a target like a tree instead of a building or building instead of a tree he said at the time. You know perhaps some of the imagery that we collect in the field may help answer some of those questions.

But Samaras also was well aware of the real dangers of storm chasing.

At times I have mixed feelings about chasing the storms he said. On one hand they are incredibly beautiful on the other hand these powerful storms can create devastating damage that change people lives forever.

At the end of our chase last year Samaras told me it was his desire to know more to inform us all that fueled him to keep going out into the storm again and again.

I don't know how many storms I've seen in my lifetime but every single one of them I still get pretty excited he said. The little boy in me just wants to come out here and just watch and stare.

Doctor Who Matt Smiths departure sparks fevered speculation

It is a debate that hasn't actually run for the entire 900 year span of the Time Lord's life though it can sometimes feel that way who should be the next incarnation of the Doctor and is it time for a woman and or a non white actor

The latest outbreak of speculation was sparked by the announcement that Matt Smith who has held the Tardis keys for the past three years will bow out with what the BBC described as a spectacular exit taking in a November episode marking the show's 50th anniversary followed by a Christmas special.

Almost immediately bookmakers issued odds on who might be the 12th Doctor installing Rupert Grint and Russell Tovey as joint favourites for little other apparent reason than respectively one co starred in the Harry Potter series while the other has been previously and wrongly linked with the role.

Newspapers joined in the game naming Olivia Colman as a possible choice for Steven Moffat the BBC1 show's current mastermind again seemingly for little other reason than that the Broadchurch star is currently very popular.

Another common avenue for conjecture was the notion of a black actor taking over. Names here included Idris Elba and Ashley Walters.

Those in the parallel TV and Doctor Who industries stressed however that such tips are not only guesswork but ill informed guesswork. Before Smith was anointed to replace David Tennant at the start of 2009 about 16 months before his series began pundits were busy tipping the likes of James Nesbitt Catherine Tate Catherine Zeta Jones Paterson Joseph and even David Walliams.

However the precedent is that of the 11 Doctors chosen so far only Peter Davison was already a significant name plus Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston both somewhat different in that they were re launching the programme.

I love all the speculation. It's never any of the names who get touted said Tom Spilsbury editor of Doctor Who magazine. This debate about a woman taking the part has gone on forever. When Tom Baker left he said 'Good luck to the new Doctor whoever he or she may be.' Since then the media hasn't let go of it and that was 32 years ago.

A female doctor would have to be led by the plot rather than tokenism or novelty he argued If you come up with a good storyline that's a good reason to do it. But 'Why not ' isn't really enough in itself. The very important thing with the Doctor is that you are trying to convince the audience that it is literally the same person each time. You want to have someone who's a bit different but not so radically different. I'm not saying it couldn't work but you're making it tougher for the audience.

Those in TV add that the replacement will be most likely closer to Smith's age than say William Hartnell who was 55 when he became the first Doctor in 1963. It is a young show and it has by and large a young audience said Andy Harries formerly head of drama for Granada. I think an older Doctor has less appeal to the kids these days. I think they would have to go young.

One TV agent who asked not to be named said he felt the most likely big change would be a non white lead For it to be an unknown black or Asian actor someone of great flamboyance like Smith is more likely than it being a woman.

But he added very little could be predicted If you look at the history of the things he's done nobody but Moffat would have cast Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes or Matt Smith as Doctor Who. The only thing you can expect is the unexpected.

Spilsbury however dismissed as ill founded the idea the actor would have to be young pointing to the success of The Sarah Jane Adventures a Doctor Who children's spin off starring Elisabeth Sladen then in her 60s The idea that children won't relate to people who are much older just isn't true.

Storm Chasers Tim Samaras Paul Samaras and Carl Young Killed in Oklahoma ...

Storm chaser and meteorologist Tim Samaras his storm chaser partner Carl Young 45 and his son Paul Samaras 24 were among the 11 people killed in the latest round of tornadoes and severe weather to hit Oklahoma Friday night according to family members.

They were killed near El Reno in an EF3 tornado with winds up to 165 mph that ripped through the Oklahoma City area during rush hour.

They put themselves in harm's way so that they can educate the public about the destructive power of these storms Canadian County Undersheriff Chris West told the Associated Press.

Tim Samaras 55 dedicated the last three decades to learning about tornadoes while he successfully combined his passion for storm chasing and an engineering career.

I'm not sure exactly why I chase storms. Perhaps it's to witness the incredible beauty of what Mother Nature can create Samaras said in a Youtube video posted on his website.

Samaras' brother Jim Samaras posted a statement on Tim Samaras' Facebook book early Sunday morning

It truly is sad that we lost my great brother Tim and his great son Paul. Our hearts also go out to the Carl Young family as well as they are feeling the same feelings we are today the statement said. They all unfortunately passed away but doing what they LOVED. Chasing Tornado's. I look at it that he is in the 'big tornado in the sky...'

PHOTOS Twisters Hit OKC Area Again

ABC News meteorologist Ginger Zee knew Tim Samaras well and said his death was a reminder of the power of the storm.

Out of all storm chasers he doesn't take chances he's the one that puts the probes in the path of the tornado to learn more about them. He is not you know a young gun running around making bad decisions person so I am so sad and shocked it is such a loss for the community Zee said of Samaras.

Watch the Nightline 2012 interview with Tim Samaras on the mystery of how lightning forms.

Zee said Samaras left behind a legacy of work.

He was a pioneer he was getting things and teaching us things that no one else could do. This is a guy who was not just a meteorologist he's an engineer he's one of the smartest men I have ever met in my life she said.

Samaras holds the world record for measuring the lowest barometric pressure drop (100 millibars) inside of a tornado that destroyed the town of Manchester South Dakota on June 24 2003 according to his website.

Samaras also built a special probe equipped with cameras that are able to look inside of a tornado safely.

The probe allowed Samaras and Young to document the tornado from different angles and speeds when they deployed the device in the path of a twister on June 11 2004 near Storm Lake Iowa.

RELATED Scientists Put an Eye in the Heart of the Storm

Terry Garcia Executive Vice President National Geographic Society said Samaras was a courageous and brilliant scientist who fearlessly pursued tornadoes and lightning in the field in an effort to better understand these phenomena.

The National Geographic Society made 18 grants to Tim for research over the years for field work like he was doing in Oklahoma at the time of his death and he was one of our 2005 Emerging Explorers. Tim's research included creation of a special probe he would place in the path of a twister to measure data from inside the tornado his pioneering work on lightning was featured in the August 2012 issue of National Geographic magazine Garcia said in a statement. Though we sometimes take it for granted Tim's death is a stark reminder of the risks encountered regularly by the men and women who work for us. This is an enormous loss for his family his wide circle of friends and colleagues and National Geographic.

Peppering Net With Shots Blackhawks Slip Two Into It

For a period and a half on Saturday the Blackhawks peppered the Los Angeles Kings net with nothing to show for it. They outshot the Kings by 17 2 in the first period yet trailed by a goal. Patience though trumped frustration. The Blackhawks found their offense and grabbed Game 1 of the Western Conference finals 2 1.

Game 2 is Sunday at United Center.

The series set up as a contrast in styles the up tempo offense of the Blackhawks against the size of the Kings defense and Quick the most valuable player in last year s Stanley Cup playoffs. Game 1 fit the billing. The Kings did not register a shot for the first eight minutes while the Blackhawks dominated the puck the pace and the possession.

He does some things in the net that you try to overcome Blackhawks Coach Joel Quenneville said. Volume and traffic on shots is the only way to get this guy.

At 12 minutes 29 seconds of the second period the Blackhawks relentless pressure paid off. Johnny Oduya fired a shot from the point that Quick saved with a blocker. But the rebound bounced to the stick of Patrick Sharp as he streaked toward the net. Sharp beat Quick with a put back for his team high eighth goal of the playoffs.

He s going to make those saves from the outside Sharp said. It s about getting to the inside. It s about outworking their defensemen to get those second and third opportunities.

Four minutes after Sharp s goal Duncan Keith took a pass from Bryan Bickell at the point and fired a shot at Quick. Marian Hossa posted in front of the goal held out his stick and deflected the puck past the screened Quick.

The Blackhawks had the lead and what had been a subdued crowd came alive. Chicago killed a penalty midway through the third period and Corey Crawford who had 21 saves made the lead hold up. The Blackhawks even flexed a little muscle with a big hit from Dave Bolland on Mike Richards in the final minutes that brought the home fans to their feet.

Before the series the Blackhawks talked about the bounces that would be needed to beat Quick who entered Game 1 leading the playoffs with a .948 save percentage and a 1.5 goals against average. Those breaks eventually went Chicago s way Saturday but only after the Kings were the recipients of the puck s first critical hop late in the first period.

After a failed clearing attempt Crawford tried to sweep the puck away from his crease and Bolland also got a stick on it in an attempt to clear the zone. But the puck ricocheted off the stick of Justin Williams and skipped past Crawford into the net.

It was Williams s third goal in two games he scored both goals for the Kings in Game 7 against the San Jose Sharks in the second round. Saturday s goal though did little to change the game s flow as the Blackhawks tested Quick from the opening face off.

In the early part of the game Quick was equal to Chicago s many challenges. In the first period he stuffed Patrick Kane during a four on four as Kane skated alone through the goal mouth after a pass from Jonathan Toews in the corner. Kane measured a shot but Quick turned it away with his stick hand.

Later in the first Quick stopped a one timer from Sharp and then a good chance on the rebound from Brandon Saad. In the second period Quick gloved a laserlike wrist shot from Keith.

Shift after shift the waves of pressure we didn t have them at all it seemed Kings center Jarret Stoll said. We didn t have that consistent push we wanted to so therefore we didn t get a lot of scoring opportunities.

Both teams entered the series battle tested having won two of the past three Stanley Cups. The Blackhawks won it in 2010 and had a league high 77 points in this lockout shortened regular season. The Kings are the defending champions and peaking again in the postseason. Each team also survived a seven game series in the second round the Kings taking out the Sharks and the Blackhawks needing overtime to eliminate the Detroit Red Wings.

The Kings welcomed the return of Stoll who missed the final six games of the series against the Sharks after a hit to the head from Raffi Torres in Game 1. But the Blackhawks left the arena knowing they were the team that imposed its style and speed on the Kings and on Quick their seemingly invincible goaltender.

Quick s a good goalie Sharp said. We try not to talk about him too much and go out there and control what we can control.
